Running update: Tricky
1. My first Test 10Ks were horrible failures.
See, I decided to change up my training routine from Run More Miles Than The Race So That I'm Super Prepared And 6.2 Miles Seems Easy Because I'm Used to 9 or 10 Miles to Try To Run 6.2 Miles Under 60 Minutes To See If you Can Even Do It.
And it was awful. Like, in the painful way. And then it was awful in the time way because I miscalculated (shocker) the pace at which I'd need to run to finish my 6.2 miles in under 60 minutes and found myself at the 60 minute mark with .03 to go. I was sad.
And tired and pissed off and annoyed so I went and drank wine with my neighbors and felt better YAY.
2. My 3rd Test 10K last Saturday was a success!
I went back out last Saturday morning having ratcheted back my Virtual Partner's pace so that as long as I stayed ahead of her (whore) I'd be set to come in under 60 minutes. AND THEN I TOTALLY DID.

Awesome - now I know that, when running my usual street course, it's possible for my body to cover 6.2 miles in under an hour.
Not gracefully or without sniveling, but in under an hour. That's what counts.
But, of course, this is where doubt creeps in. About what happens when there aren't any streetlights to force me to rest and gather strength for the next stretch and then won't it be nice when I don't have to dodge any haplessly-manned SUVs careening about the streets with an "I eat runners for breakfast" bumper sticker on both front and back bumpers.
Thankfully, I had a good run on Tuesday morning (23:01 - that's almost the 22s - woo!) so I'm hoping the strength from that miracle will carry me through tomorrow morning's run successfully so that I can sit in synagogue and bask in the glory of a sub-60 Test 10K which would entertain me enough so that I only contemplate suicide half a dozen times.
I don't like it in there, let me just say that.
Anyway, I just wanted to have this decent 10K training time out there for the world to see so that, in the event that I suck ass tomorrow and come in plus-60 I won't have to do that thing where I say, "but really, the week before was really good!" and then you all don't believe me because you're whores.
I mean, I'm just saying it could be like that. I don't know if you're always this way.
So - for tomorrow - I'm hoping to stack up another sub-60 Test 10K and then again on the following Saturday and then NOT TAPER before the 10K on 4/17 because do I really need to taper for a 10K? I don't think so.
I just need to run fast and meanwhile not succumb to the burning desire inside of me that wants me to lie down and welcome warm, comforting death.
Tricky.

Woot! Yay! Go Finny Go! Make that Virtual Partner Whore wish she never made your virtual acquaintance! Then, settle your sub-60 fanny down on the deck chair and have a nice, crisp, non-virtual, victory gin & tonic and revel in your sub-sixty-super-power greatness....
ReplyDeleteIt took me 2 hours and 20 minutes to do 8 miles this morning and I totally want to die now. It took me nearly an hour to do the last two miles if that tells you anything. You're going to do great on your race.
ReplyDeleteFinny, you magnificent creature you. You goddess in stinky shoes. You model of sweaty dedication. Wow. I could probably run 6 miles in 6 days provided I only ran 50 feet at a time and was then allowed naps and iced water. Bitch.

ReplyDeleteGuess what... I walked 60 miles in March. Well, maybe 5 of those miles were at a run, but most of it was a walk. (We've been doing a little over 5K most weekdays.) I like to get into these things slowly, so maybe one day this year I will be running all the time. My new goal in life is to one day be able to actually run a full 10K.
Also, I just had to come back and tell you that thanks to this title I've been singing, "It's tricky to rock a rhyme, to rock a rhyme that's right on time. It's tricky. Ta, ta, ta tricky, tricky, tricky."
